Contextual Kits for T2CT - Dual Aversion & CPP

Reference : BIO-T2CT-DAV#BIO-T2CT-CPP

The Contextual Kits for T2CT have been designed to enhance thermal place preference studies (T2CT) by adding a contextual dimension, enabling a more comprehensive behavioral approach to pain assessment. Inspired by the paradigms described by Jabakhanji et al., Molecular Pain (2006), these modules allow researchers to explore the interaction between thermal and environmental stimuli. A crucial aspect to investigate inflammatory and neuropathic pain mechanisms.

With these kits, it is possible to combine within a single apparatus:

  • a dual aversion paradigm, both contextual (light/dark, visual patterns) and thermal,
  • or a Conditioned Place Preference (CPP) paradigm.

The Contextual Kits can be easily mounted on the T2CT Bioseb without altering video detection or standard system functions. Two configurations are available:

• “Dual Aversion” Kit (Equivalent to Light & Dark test):
Two distinct compartments: one white, open and brightly lit; the other one black, covered with an opaque red lid. Ideal for anxiety-related experiments or escape latency measurements. Additional light reinforcement can be used to adjust aversive intensity.

• “CPP” Kit (Conditioned Place Preference):
Three distinct compartments, including a transparent central corridor for evaluation of time spent in each section and for contextual preferences. Each compartment can be fitted with different contextual panels to create neutral or distinctive environments. Outer compartments are closed by removable manual doors.

Each kit is easy to assemble, lightweight, detachable, and alcohol-cleanable. Fully compatible with all Bioseb T2CT systems, the video tracking of the system will work perfectly with the Contextual kits.

The design of this kit builds upon the findings reported by Jabakhanji et al., Molecular Pain (2006):

  • Animals exhibit specific behavioral responses to nociceptive thermal stimuli when exposed to defined contextual environments.
  • Such context-dependent paradigms enable evaluation of pain within a more global behavioral approach, integrating both sensory and motivational components of the response rather than relying solely on reflex withdrawal.

Included Contextual Panels

The Dual Aversion Kit is supplied with one white and one black compartment.

The CPP Kit includes a full set of interchangeable and reusable contextual panels:

  •   Plain white
  •   Plain black
  •   Vertical black-and-white stripes
  •   Horizontal black-and-white stripes
  •   Black dots on white background
  •   White dots on black background

These panels create different visual environments, reinforcing the contextual aspect of the task and allowing multiple configurations to avoid bias due to innate visual preferences.
